About Faro
Faro is Algarve’s capital yet most visitors pass through it without stopping. That is, quietly, one of the great missed opportunities in Portuguese and Algarve travel.
Beneath its unhurried surface, Faro holds layers of Phoenician, Roman, Visigothic, Byzantine, Moorish, and medieveal and modern Portuguese history that rival cities many times its fame. The old town, encircled by walls that have stood for over two millennia, remains remarkably intact. Once it was a bustling town of trade and navigation, it is now one of the most tranquil old towns you'll ever encounter.
The Secret Trail exists to give the people who are ready to see the old town more deeply and understand why it is so much more than what appears on the surface. To show people the undiscovered parts of Faro.
An ancient semitic people whose roots lie in modern day Lebanon settled a city they named "Ossonoba".
Over five-hundred years of culture, architecture and language made it's mark on the city we now call Faro.
The earthquake that destroyed much of Lisbon also struck Faro. The Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves was devestated. What survived, and what was rebuilt, tells a story of remarkable resilience.
The Trail Grows
The Secret Trail is expanding across Algarve’s historic cities. Faro comes first. Olhão follows. Each city, its own trail. Each trail, its own character.
